EDUCATION 

 

At Thoo Mweh Khee we provide a traditional education from nursery on through high school with standard subjects of Math, Social Studies, History, Science, and language skills including Karen, Thai, Burmese, and English.  The main language of instruction is Karen, although other languages are used depending on the proficiency of teachers.


POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION

The main goal of our post-secondary education is a continuation of essential skills gained in high school as well as a broadening of knowledge and proficiency in order to prepare the students to be impactful citizens and world-changers in their communities. TMK's Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree currently provides students with three choices of major:

 

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN EDUCATION

The purpose of the education major is to produce well-rounded educational professionals who will lead the transformation of education in Karen State and the wider context of Burma. The education major provides a mix of practical teaching skills such as literacy development and behavior management along with administrative necessities such as record keeping and data management. The goal is to produce qualified teachers and educational professionals with the skills to navigate the complicated and underdeveloped education system of Karen State, especially as the Myanmar government becomes increasingly involved.

 

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES

Students who finish a degree in Social Science will have an understanding of economic, political, social, educational, and environmental issues around the world and influencing the situation in Karen State. The final year of study will include a six-month internship with an organization or business based in Karen State or along the border.  Our goal for students is a deep understanding of big-picture issues affecting the region that is grounded in the local community.  The students will be able to evaluate policies, potential development projects, and business opportunities for the benefit of the community.

 

BACHELOR OF ARTS IN POLITICAL SCIENCE

The goal of the political science major is to give students a comprehensive and holistic understanding of the functions of politics, specifically the role politics and power play within their current context. Students will take courses such as International Relations and Conflict and Peace-building. Following completion of the program, students will be able to successfully evaluate current public policy and engage in ethical governance.
